Handwriting is taught in almost every primary school and measured in almost none. Ameza gives schools a structured programme, trained staff and the tools to show whether it worked.

THE PROGRAMME

Structured Handwriting Programme

A structured handwriting programme delivered through short, focused daily practice sessions for a selected cohort of pupils identified by the school, taught by the school’s own trained staff. The programme gives schools a practical way to strengthen handwriting without adding a lengthy new programme to the school day.

Efficient, automatic
handwriting

The emphasis is not on producing decorative or perfectly neat handwriting. The aim is to help children develop efficient, increasingly automatic handwriting that supports them as writers.

Print or Joined

The programme focuses on either print or joined handwriting. The right focus is agreed with the school during the planning conversation, based on the age and starting point of the cohort. Schools wishing to cover both can run a second cycle once the first is secure.

EYFS to early KS3

The programme is adapted to each developmental phase (EYFS to early KS3), ensuring age-appropriate focus on fine motor development, letter formation accuracy and writing fluency. In EYFS, the programme focuses on fine motor development, pencil control and secure letter formation foundations, designed to sit alongside the setting’s existing play-based curriculum rather than replace any part of it.

What the School Receives

01 Teacher professional development

Staff are introduced to the principles behind effective handwriting instruction and shown how to model and reinforce handwriting consistently.

04 School-led progress review

Teachers collect a short handwriting sample from each pupil at the start and at the end. Ameza provides a simple comparison guide so staff can review the changes together and decide next steps. A full Ameza analysis and written summary is available as an add-on.

02 A structured progression

Teachers have a clear sequence to follow, rather than having to build one themselves.

05 Implementation support

Ameza works with the school lead to establish the approach, support consistency across classrooms and review how it is embedding in practice.

03 Short daily
practice

Focused sessions designed to be manageable within the school day and delivered by school staff.

What Makes This Programme Distinct?

The Writing Framework (2025) makes clear that automaticity in handwriting is essential to reduce cognitive load and enable pupils to focus on composing meaningful writing.

Therefore, the programme is founded on the principle that secure handwriting underpins fluent transcription, enabling pupils to translate ideas into written language with accuracy, speed and confidence. The programme also supports teachers to recognise handwriting difficulty accurately, considering both the writing process (posture, grip, formation) and the final written outcome.

Building on this, the programme provides a clear, curriculum-aligned progression focused on accurate letter formation and spatial consistency, ensuring pupils develop fluency and control in written tasks.

This programme is aligned with the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) guidance on supporting pupils with SEND, which emphasises high-quality teaching, explicit instruction and carefully structured practice.

Teachers are supported to identify the signs when handwriting is not developing as expected, and to know what to do about it in the classroom.
